In Mexico, it is called “Une baile con La Muerte,” in medieval Europe, “Danse Macabre”—the dance with death. Dr. Bateman will explore the richly complex world of bereavement as expressed in worldwide folktales to map out some of the “steps” in this sad, but universal song. After the initial shock, pain and immobilization that loss presents, we are often left in a state of chronic despair. The familiar hook upon which we have hung our identity is gone and the future looks obscure. According to mythology, we do have to say good-bye to our loved ones, but at the same time, we are being offered a chance to say hello to a different type of relationship. Still loving, and the creative expression of that bond is the focus of this workshop. Join us for an intense but meaningful journey into cross-cultural understandings of loss, and learn to connect the mythic with the personal.
